SG
updates Web site to engage, inform students
Student Government recently launched its new Web site, offering a variety
of features aimed at keeping students informed and involved in the workings
of SG.
The new Website was created and will be maintained by Bellafly Designs, an independent development firm -- the address is www.wfusg.org. According to SG secretary senior Jonathan Willingham, who is in charge of the project, SG wanted the new Web site for two reasons. First, a site run by an outside firm can easily be maintained at a professional level from year to year. In the past, the site was in the hands of students, so the quality of the site depended on the knowledge of the students, and the site was not updated as often as desired. Second, an outside design firm could provide a number of features that SG wanted to include on the site. "We wanted to make information more accessible to everyone," Willingham said. "We wanted to get everything online in order to make it easy for students, both inside and outside of SG, to locate information." The new Web site includes a number of features of interest to both members of SG and the rest of the student body. The site includes an online poll, which will be a forum for students to express their opinion on a particular issue. Currently, the poll question asks voters whether they think the university should construct a new recreation center. The site posts the running totals of yes/no votes. Students can also ask questions and voice their comments and concerns via an online message board. Another feature of the new Web site is the online calendar. Eventually, SG hopes the calendar will include all events of interest to students. According to Willingham, students will be able to learn about campus activities without having to search through the many university calendars. The site also features "What to do at WFU," a directory of locations in the Winston-Salem area. This replaces the "What to Do at Wake Forest and Beyond" pamphlet that SG formerly published. Now, students can go online to locate movie theaters, gyms, restaurants, golf courses, clubs and other places of interest. SG also lists all student organizations on its Web site. Since SG oversees the charters of these organizations, it wanted to provide contact information for students interested in participating in them. The directory is organized according to special interests. For example, an interested student can browse Greek organizations, sports clubs or religious groups. On the Web site, students can access information about SG itself, including minutes from meetings, reports and contact information. Also available are procedures and frequently asked questions pertaining to students who are written up for various violations. Students can search by dorm to locate their legislators in order to share their concerns. "I'm really excited about the new Web site," Willingham said. "I hope it will better connect SG with the student body so students can be in touch with their representatives and get us any information or opinions that they want to share." |
