Deacs
can't time Tigers in ACC finale
With only two regular season games left the women's volleyball team was running out of time to make a move in the ACC standings. Last weekend's two tough losses to No. 23 Georgia Tech and Clemson, leave the Deacs with only one more chance to make a move in the ACC, but the run will have to be made in the ACC Tournament in Atlanta, Ga., this week. Wake Forest closed out their ACC regular season in a tough five game loss to the Clemson Tigers in South Carolina. The Deacs looked like they were going to blow the Tigers out of their own gym and sweep Clemson just like they did Oct.15 after winning the first two games by scores of 30-28 and 31-29. But apparently Clemson didn't get the memo that they should go down easy and let Wake Forest walk out with the sweep. Clemson stormed back on the Deacons, as they took an extended third game by a score of 31-29. Following their gritty victory in the third game, Clemson continued their comeback in the fourth game as they squeaked out another game by the score of 30-28 forcing a fifth and deciding game. In the fifth Wake Forest could only muster up a team hitting percentage of .045 while Clemson hit the ball extremely well with their best attack percentage of the game at .308. Clemson finished the Deacs off with a 15-10 victory in the fifth game. The victory put Clemson at 17-15 (8-8 ACC) and dropped the Deacons to 13-17 (6-10 ACC). Statistically, the Deacs put up some impressive totals. Freshman Valerie Rydberg led the team with a game-high 29 kills, followed up by Kim Stern with 21 kills. Both players hit over .300 for the game; they were two of the only three to do so. Senior Ashlee Phillips was the other Deacon hitting over .300, she also tallied a notable 60 kills. As for Clemson, they had three players top the 20-kill mark and two players amass over 20 digs. For the game, the Tigers had a 91-83 advantage in kills and hit the ball more accurately than the Deacs, as they hit .252 for the game compared to Wake Forest's .235. Wake Forest got a feel for what they are up against this coming week in Atlanta, as they took the Ramblin' Wreck of Georgia Tech Nov. 15. The Yellow Jackets proved they were deserving of their No. 23 national ranking as they swept the Deacs in three games; 30-17, 30-18 and 30-24 and improved their record to 27-5 (12-3 ACC). Georgia Tech eliminated any doubts of a let down as they used an effective offense in which they hit .387 and a dominating defense that held the Deacs to a .153 hitting percentage. This week the Deacs will have one more opportunity to show the ACC what they can do. Seeded seventh in the ACC tournament with a final conference record of 6-10 the Deacs will once again take on the Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech Nov. 22 at 5 p.m. The winner of the that game will take on the winner of Duke and Maryland game. The tournament takes place at O'Keefe Gymnasium, the home of Georgia Tech and will culminate with the final, Nov. 24 at 3:30 p.m. After the tournament, the Deacs will close out their regular season at home Nov. 30 against Alabama.
