Football fails to finish off 'Noles after strong start

The rock barely missed this time for David. Upset was in the air. The fans could smell it. The Demon Deacon football team could taste it. And Goliath, the No. 20 Florida State Seminoles, could see it -- and then they shattered the dream, by withstanding an early Deacon run and blasting by for a 34-21 victory on Nov. 2 at Groves Stadium. The game was televised regionally on ESPN2.

This just in, college football is not "just a game."No matter how you slice it, college football is becoming a business and a rather large one at that. The mental and physical toughness, the desire and the determination winning the National Championship used to take, has taken a back seat as it appears the best way to bring home the Sears trophy is to buy it.

Golf's Clau takes 1st, team finishes 4th

The Wake Forest women's golf team had a great weekend at the Landfall Tradition, but wound up with a disappointing finish. Although the team ended with its best finish of the season, the Deacs weren't able to win the tournament they led going into the final round.


Lacrosse league running across Carolina

Seniors A.J. Broderick and Karen Potter just took women's lacrosse in the state of North Carolina to a whole new level. As former captains of the women's club lacrosse team, Broderick and Potter decided to completely revamp women's lacrosse programs statewide by creating a cohesive league in which area university club teams could compete.

Men's soccer clinches ACC top seed

The men's soccer team is two wins closer to its first undefeated regular season in school history. The No. 1-ranked team defeated Duke 2-0 Nov. 1 and Davidson 4-0 Nov. 5 in two road tests to push its record to 13-0-4 on the season.

Cross country captures sixth place at ACC's

The injury-riddled men's cross country squad finished sixth in the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships on Nov. 2 in Atlanta, Ga., with a total of 148 points.


Volleyball bounces back to wax the Wahoos

After tough losses to ACC rivals Duke and Maryland, the Wake Forest women's volleyball team bounced back and smoked the Virginia Cavaliers in three straight games, improving their record to 12-14 (5-7 ACC). The Deacs will now have plenty of time to prepare for tough ACC opponents N.C. State and UNC on Nov. 8 and 9.


ACC slide haunts women's soccer

A mere 13 seconds changed the course of the Deacons' pending postseason. The Deacons battled the Duke Blue Devils in their final regular season game of the 2002 season at Spry Stadium Nov. 2. The 2-1 loss gives the Deacs an overall record of 12-6-1 and a 2-4-1 record in the difficult Atlantic Coast Conference.

Women's cross country rises to No. 4 in country

The Wake Forest women's cross country team finally received due recognition this week, claiming No. 4 in the FinishLynx/NCAA poll -- the highest ranking in over two decades. Finishing fourth out of 75 teams in the NCAA Pre-National Invitational Tournament, the women harriers made great strides as they darted ahead of the N.C. State Wolfpack for the first time in 10 years.
