Assault
worries campus
A university student was threatened with a weapon and robbed of near Collins Residence Hall around 10:50 p.m. Oct. 17, just minutes after he withdrew money from the Wachovia ATM on University Plaza. According to a university press release, the suspect is described as six-foot, 150 lbs. with a dark complexion. He wore a gray, sweatshirt, which was reportedly pulled down over his head, matching gray sweatpants and white athletic shoes. University police chief Regina Lawson said the department is working hard to pool together witnesses' information to catch the perpetrator. "We have had witnesses come forward who saw (the suspect) before and after the incident occurred, and we're working with those witnesses to try to get a better physical description and, ultimately, we'd like to get a positive ID on him," Lawson said. "Some of the witnesses saw it from the distance, some saw in closer proximity." According to the press release, although the victim did not see a weapon, he told police the suspect threatened him with an "unidentified object" pressed against his lower back. No injuries were reported. The suspect was last seen fleeing in the same direction he came from, towards Reynolda Hall. Lawson said she suggests people practice caution at night at the university ATM in the future. "I would suggest that people avoid ATM machines when they are alone, late at night, whether on campus or off," Lawson said.
