Volleyball snuffs Flames, creams Cavs
By Ben Woolley
Old Gold and Black Reporter
After winning two out of their last three matches, the Wake Forest Volleyball Team (8-9, 2-2 ACC) is hitting their mark at exactly the right time, as they travel to Chapel Hill on Oct. 11 to take on the 11th-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels. By far, the Deacs' most impressive performance in some time was their win Oct. 8 against the Liberty Flames. Falling behind by two games, they stormed back and took the final two games, then blew the Flames out of the water in the fifth and final game. The Deacs got out of the gate fast in the fifth game with a 6-0 lead and never looked back as they finished off the pesky Flames 15-4 to take the match. Coach Valorie Baker was more than pleased with the performance and said, "Liberty is a tough team, and this will be a real confidence builder." Leading the Deacs in their 23-30, 25-30, 30-20, 30-28 and 15-4 win was freshmen middle blocker Christy Williams. Williams' had a team-high 19 kills and 12 blocks to accompany her single-match school record of 10 block assists. Coach Baker was pleased with the youngster's performance and said, "her playing intensity the whole match was outstanding." Not to be outdone was senior setter Ashlee Phillips who tallied 48 assists along with eight kills and seven digs. In their victory over UVa., the team once again faced adversity. The Deacs won the first game 30-22 but after dropping a tough second game 24-30, the Deacs went on to win the next two in convincing fashion. The middle led the way for the Deacs the entire way, "I commend all the middle, for their performance both offensively and defensively," Baker said. The most unexpected of players lead the middle attack; junior middle blocker Jessica Hauf had a career high seven blocks, four of which were solo. Another unlikely hero was freshman setter Erin Borhart, who took the place of senior setter Ashlee Phillips halfway through the second game. Borhart came into a tough situation in the second game with the team trailing. "Erin is great as a freshmen, especially under pressure," Baker said. Borhart finished with 17 assists, six kills and nine digs. The one low spot of the week for the Deacs came the night of Oct. 5 when they dropped a tough four-game match to the Maryland Terrapins. Baker commended the Terps' on solid effort and execution, "Their go-to guys got it done, and they played well." Despite hitting the ball remarkably well, the Deacs just couldn't find that groove. "We were inconsistent," Baker said. They nearly found that consistency but their fourth game rally fell short by the score of 31-29. The loss dropped the Deacs to .500 record in ACC play, while it was the first win for the Terrapins in ACC play. The Deacs will have to carry over the confidence they showed against UVa. and the "don't quit," attitude they showed in the third, fourth and fifth games against Liberty into their match against No. 11 UNC as well as N.C. State, Oct. 11 and Oct. 12. |
