Campus
coffee shop is an exciting first step This column represents the views of the Old Gold and Black Editorial Board Student Government announced this week that a student coffee shop is due to open early spring in the former Delta Sigma Phi lounge in Taylor House. This is an exciting, concrete step in improving student life on campus. The idea was first presented at the President's Leadership Conference three weeks ago and is already being enacted. The late hours are perhaps the most exciting aspect of the soon-to-be coffee shop. Having a place to hang out until 4 a.m. on weekends will provide students with a refreshingly Greek-free atmosphere and hopefully good coffee to boot! The coffee shop's success rests upon campus support, however, and Student Government must make sure to get a wide range of student input. Student talent should be showcased in every aspect of the coffee shop, from the decor and design, to rotating artwork on the walls. A popular feature in many coffee houses is simple board games that encourage group interaction and fun. Student Government must also be careful not to take on too much in the beginning. The wisest course of action for the beginning is to first provide a full-service coffee shop where students can hang out and converse at their leisure. While we understand initial budget constraints, the university and student planners should work to provide a full-service coffee shop complete with specialty coffees, teas and pastries. The more services offered to students, the more successful the undertaking. |
