ACC Football 2002: A brave, new world
By Matt Gallagher
Sports Editor

Just a few, short years ago, ACC football games were only played because NCAA law mandated it. There was Florida State and then there was Florida State’s fodder — also known as the rest of the conference.

However, those days are long gone. Bobby Bowden and his boys are no longer invincible. I think they are done—so done they need a fork stuck in them.

Maryland led the charge last year in unseating King ‘Nole, but let’s face it — those turtles aren’t repeating. So that means yet another monarch will be crowned at the end of the season. My pick is N.C. State, mainly because junior quarterback Philip Rivers is one bad mamba jamba. But enough about the future, here’s a quick look at the upcoming week in ACC football.

Clemson at No. 12 Georgia

Who’s the boss? Not Clemson. Georgia linebacker Boss Bailey and company will ensure that the Tigers go the way of Tony Danza.

Virginia at No. 5 Florida State

Florida State barely beat Iowa State. The Cavs actually lost to Colorado State in Charlottesville. So this out to be a swell game. Cav frosh Wali Lundy, a running back, and Seminole quarterback Chris Rix, should both have solid games.
