By Jim Gleitman
Old Gold and Black Reporter
The women's tennis team is back doing what they do best winning. Over the weekend of March 30-31, the 3rd-ranked Deacs dealt losses to both No. 23 Notre Dame and No. 58 Michigan. Following the two victories the team improved its record to 17-2 on the year. On March 30 the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame visited the Deacs hoping to pull off an upset. However, Head Coach Brian Fleishman's squad prevailed as they pulled out the 4-3 victory. In the doubles matches the top ranked duo of junior Bea Bielik and senior Janet Bergman made quick work of Notre Dame's Katie Cunha and Lindsey Green, winning 8-1. Sophomore Aimee Smith and freshman Karin Coetzee teamed up to win the No. 2 doubles match by a score of 8-6 over Sarah Jane Connelly and Alicia Salas. Notre Dame's Becky Barnum and Nina Vaughan defeated freshmen Danielle Schwartz and Katie Martzolf 8-6 in the No. 3 doubles match giving the Irish some dignity, but the point to the Deacs nonetheless. The singles matches were hotly contested and wound up in a draw as the teams split the six matches three apiece. The top of the order for the Deacs came out focused and took care of business. Bielik blanked Barnum 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles match and Bergman, ranked 17th nationally, handled Vaughan 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 2 singles match. The Irish fought back with a victory in the No. 6 match as Schwartz fell to Connelly 2-6, 1-6. Senior Maren Haus then fell in the No. 3 match to Green 5-7, 4-6 and Martzolf lost 5-7, 4-6 to Salas at the No. 4 spot. However, Coetzee iced the win for the Deacs with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Cunha in the No. 5 singles match. Following their 4-3 victory over Notre Dame the Deacs came out on fire against a Michigan team known for pulling off upsets. The Deacs owned the Wolverines in the doubles matches taking victories in all three. At No. 1, with no introduction needed, Bergman and Bielik throttled Michelle DaCosta and Leanne Rutherford, 8-1. Smith and Coetzee held off Michigan's Kim Plaushines and Jen Vaughn, 8-6, while Martzolf and Schwartz won 8-3 at No.3 over Christine Nolan and Kavitha Tipirneni. The Deac's dominance continued in singles play as they took five of the six matches. Bielik posted a 6-2, 6-1 straight set shellacking over Tippernini. Bergman took DaCosta 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot. Then it was the freshmen's turn as the trio played in the four through six matches. At No. 4, Coetzee improved her individual record to 10-2 this spring with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Rutherford. Martzolf won 6-3, 7-5 over Plushines at No. 5 and Schwartz posted a 6-1, 6-3 win over Joanne Musgrove. The Deacs will return to action April 4 when they travel to North Carolina for an ACC match-up against the Tar Heels at 5 p.m. |
