Police investigate possible campus peeping tom link

By Phil Glynn

University Police are investigating a case involving a man accused of peeping into windows in Chapel Hill. The reason for their involvement is the discovery of materials during the suspect's arrest that suggest he may have engaged in similar activity here at the university. Lawson, however, said that the evidence found is inconclusive at this time.

"We are just trying to obtain additional information," she said. "We have had no complaints at this time."

Lawson said the department was alerted by Chapel Hill City Police after a search of the suspect's apartment turned up items that suggested he had been on this campus. Though Lawson was unable to give a specific list of items she said that there was something specific that led Chapel Hill Police to believe the suspect had been here.

Lawson said she can neither confirm or deny CHPD's suspicion at this point. She said the department is using "process of elimination to determine whether this individual has been at this campus."

University Police has said that they were unable to determine a time frame during which the suspect may have been on campus.

Lawson said that she expects to be closer to a definitive statement on the validity of the implications April 5.
