D' Antona, Deacs take series from 'Pack, top Flames
By Matt Gallagher

And the fireworks have begun. The offensive juggernaut known as Deacon baseball has exploded, just in time for the meat of their ACC schedule. And with Florida State coming to town on April 1, the main course may have arrived. In the meantime however, the No. 8 Deacs had to rally to clinch a crucial series against N.C. State and out-slug a surprisingly strong Liberty team to improve to 20-4, 4-1 in ACC ball.

The men's tennis team had won 13 straight, achieved the highest ranking in program history and had upset on their mind when the No. 16 Duke Blue Devils traveled to Leighton Stadium March 27. But as the players left the court after the match, the disappointment on their faces said it all.

The defending national champs are back in Durham. Kentucky's returned to Lexington. And UCLA was sent back to the left coast. Three of college basketball's most storied programs didn't survive last weekend's NCAA Tournament games, and will be watching this weekend's Final Four from their living rooms.

Recently ranked No. 2 in the nation, the women's tennis team took on the sunshine state the weekend of March 23-24. Though the Deacs pounded 48th-ranked Florida State 6-1, they fell to the 3rd-ranked Florida Gators 1-6.

The men's golf team was back in action March 23-24 at the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational held on the par-72 Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro, Ga. Though the team was unable to capture its second straight victory, a very strong second place finish kept the team rolling and continued the Deacs' stellar start to this spring season. This result was made even more impressive considering the teams in the field at the event. Nine of the top 21 teams in the country, including the No. 3-ranked Deacs, were in competition.

There is nothing like a home field advantage. Confidence stems from the familiar surroundings, and the support of the fans is beyond compare. The Demon Deacon men's track and field team took full advantage of Kentner Stadium March 23 as they hosted the Wake Forest Invitational. The ten-team invitational was the first and only home meet this year for the stellar track and field team that has been accustomed to success all season long. Finishing first in eight events, the Deacs held at least one of the top four spots in all but three events.

As anyone who has been forced to dine on campus food will surely tell you, there is nothing like home cooking. The Demon Deacon women's track and field team found that out once again, as they generally had their way during the Wake Forest Invitational, held March 23 at Kentner Stadium.
