Estwanik paces Demon Deacons in opening meet

The Demon Deacon men’s indoor track and field team was back in competition Jan. 13, taking part in the North Carolina Invitational. Though this meet marked the second competition of the young season for the Deacs, it was more like a season beginner since many team members were just coming back from a long winter break.

Mason shoots Cavaliers past Deacons

For the first 10 minutes of their game against ninth-ranked Virginia Jan. 15, the Demon Deacons stifled the Cavaliers on defense, and did what they pleased on offense, opening up a 10-point lead. It looked like the Deacs were on the verge of punishing yet another ACC opponent and maintain their first-place position in the conference.

Coming off of their first ACC win against Florida State, the women’s basketball team fell to the Virginia Cavaliers 51-65 on Jan. 13 in Charlottesville, Va. This loss brings the Deacons’ record to 7-9, 1-5 in ACC play.

Santa brings Deacons seven wins, one loss

The men’s basketball team found its stocking stuffed with seven wins and only one loss over winter break, and on the strength of a 96-53 pounding of Clemson on Jan. 12 at Joel Coliseum, jumped to No. 13 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll and No. 14 in the Associated Press Poll entering its Jan. 15 battle with Virginia in Charlottesville.

Demon Deacons struck by streaks during break

The Women’s Basketball team streaked through the winter break, starting off with four straight wins, then three straight losses to begin the ACC season, and finishing off with their first ACC victory of the season. In the end, the Deacons emerged with a 7-8 overall record, 1-3 in the ACC.

Demon Deacons continue winning ways

The Women’s track and field team continued the new season with winning ways Jan. 13, taking part in the North Carolina Invitational. They won the 3,000-meter as freshman Jill Miller took first with a time of 10:21.90, sophomore Kara Mullin finished third with a time of 10:33.61 and sophomore Becca Veenstra placed fourth with a time of 10:37.87.
