By Mike Scott
Grab your beer and cigarettes, put on an ugly shirt and cut your hair into a mullet, the Deacons are going bowling … maybe. The Demon Deacon football team became bowl eligible thanks to a 38-35 victory over Northern Illinois Nov. 24 at Groves Stadium. While they may not end up with a place to play in the postseason, the win culminates a remarkable turnaround in Head Coach Jim Grobe’s first season, as the team tripled its win total from last year’s 2-9 campaign, finishing with a winning record at 6-5.

Deacs squeak past Gophers in barnburner
By Jordan Webster
Senior guard Broderick Hicks hit only one shot from the field in the Deacons’ Nov. 27 matchup with Big Ten opponent Minnesota, but he made it count.
Hicks drilled a three-pointer from the baseline to give his team an 80-79 lead with 58 seconds left in regulation, and the Demon Deacons held on to knock off the Gophers, 85-79, in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. In the three-year history of the tournament, the Deacons are one of only two teams to retain perfect 3-0 records, joining defending national champion Duke. The top-ranked Blue Devils cruised past No. 7 Iowa, 80-62 on Nov. 27. (Michigan State remains 2-0, following the postponement of their Nov. 28 game against Virginia).

By Jim Gleitman
It offered as much drama as Hamlet and kept its observers anxiously on the edge of their seats. It was just one of those games that had it all. In fact there is not much more one could ask from the Final Four Field Hockey matchup between the Deacs and the Maryland Terrapins that had been referred to as “the Championship game.” However, in the end it was the Terrapins that got the best of the Deacs for the third time this season with a 3-2 double-overtime victory in Kent, Ohio, on Nov. 17 in the semifinals of the NCAA Field Hockey Tournament.

Deacons downed by No. 1 Connecticut
By Matt Gallagher
So, there’s a reason why Connecticut is ranked No. 1 in the country in women’s basketball. The Huskies descended upon Lawrence Joel Coliseum Nov. 26 to face off against a Demon Deacon squad which was coming off three solid outings--and had a 2-1 record to show for their efforts. Nevertheless, Connecticut breezed its way through the game, rolling to an 88-38 victory.

Deacs fall to American in NCAA Tournament
By Margaret McKenzie

A 3-0 defeat at the hands of American University in the NCAA Tournament brought the 2001 season to an end for the men’s soccer team. Despite playing at Spry Stadium and enjoying a first-round bye, the Deacs could not capitalize on the home field advantage in the second -ound game on Nov. 25.
