Demon Deacs take two from state schools
By Margaret McKenzie
Old Gold and Black Reporter

Freshman forward Scott Sealy’s performance in the Demon Deacons’ contest against N.C. State on Oct. 7 not only provided the spark for the Deacs’ first Atlantic Coast Conference victory, a 3-1 defeat of the Wolfpack on Oct. 7 at Spry Stadium, but it also earned him co-ACC Player of the week honors. Sealy scored two goals and assisted on a third, a tally by sophomore midfielder Jeremiah White, his sixth goal of the season.

The Deacs picked up their third straight victory Oct. 10 over UNC-Charlotte, a 8-1 win.
The majority of the first half in the Deacs’ match with N.C. State remained scoreless, but the Deacons were able to take nine shots compared to only three from the Wolfpack. Controlling most of the play in the first half the Deacs struck first with just under eight minutes left in the first half.

After Sealy crossed the ball into the box, White controlled it in the center and fired the shot into the back of the net. White and freshman defender Kevin Wickart returned to the starting lineup for the first time since sustaining a concussion in the Deacs’ Sept. 25 victory over Gardner Webb. N.C. State quickly answered the goal when freshman midfielder Brock Trejo scored his first career goal on an assist from senior defender Damon Butler five minutes later.

The teams battled with the game tied at 1-1 for the bulk of the second half. It was not until less than 11 minutes left in regulation that the Deacs were able to break the tie.

Disrupting the communication between N.C. State goalkeeper Mitchell Watson and defender Damon Butler, Sealy stole possession of the ball in Wolfpack territory. The confusion resulted in an unassisted goal for Sealy.

Sealy scored only his third goal of the season when he added his second goal of the game, an insurance goal with under five minutes remaining. The shot came off an assist from White and junior midfielder Aaron Thomas.

The victory over N.C. State is the Deacons ninth in a row in the series against the Wolfpack and the fourth in a row in the 2001 season.

The Deacs then romped over visiting UNC-Charlotte at Spry Stadium on Oct. 10, taking the contest by a score of 8-1.

Leading the charge for the Deacs were White Sealy, both tallying two scores for the night. In all, six different Deacs notched goals, and sophomore midfielders Brian Carroll and Vicente Bastidashad each tied a school record with three assists.

The Deacons led 2-0 at the half, and it looked like Charlotte might make a game out of it as they scored to cut the deficit to a goal at 2-1 with more than 40 minutes to go in the game.

But, they had simply awoken a sleeping giant. The Deacons scored three goals in the next five minutes to put the game away.

Next up for the Deacons is a contest against Old Dominion at Spry Stadium Oct. 13 at 7 p.m.
