Simply the best: field hockey grabs No. 1 ranking

Forget the loss to Maryland, the loss to Michigan State or even the tough loss to Old Dominion. The Deacon field hockey team is moving back to the stage of field hockey prominence. On Oct. 6 the Deacs made a statement by shutting out second-ranked North Carolina for the second straight time this season.

Demon Deacons declaw Cougars, Wildcats

Senior defender Stacy Roeck scored with four minutes remaining in overtime as the women’s soccer team took down the Brigham Young Cougars, continuing its four-game winning streak Oct. 6 in what was one of the most exciting games Spry Stadium has seen this year.

Thoughts on a sports weekend

In case you care, and I know you don’t, here follows some random news from the sports world this weekend (and some from further back, too):
Because of the new military operations, or whatever the correct phrase is, in Afghanistan, it seems right to start on the international level. The guys in Red, White and Blue taught the Jamaicans a thing or two about kicking the ball around, claiming a 2-1 victory Sunday afternoon in World Cup Qualifying (that would be soccer, for those that don’t know).

Demon Deacs take two from state schools

Freshman forward Scott Sealy’s performance in the Demon Deacons’ contest against N.C. State on Oct. 7 not only provided the spark for the Deacs’ first Atlantic Coast Conference victory, a 3-1 defeat of the Wolfpack on Oct. 7 at Spry Stadium, but it also earned him co-ACC Player of the week honors. Sealy scored two goals and assisted on a third, a tally by sophomore midfielder Jeremiah White, his sixth goal of the season.

Wolfpack rally to edge Demon Deacons

The Demon Deacons suffered their third straight setback Oct. 6, as they fell to the N.C. State Wolfpack 17-14 at Groves Stadium. After starting the year off 2-0 with wins against East Carolina and Appalachian State, the Deacons have now fallen in consecutive weeks to ACC opponents Maryland, Florida State and N.C. State.

Morgan paces Deacs to third-place finish

Riding high following an impressive second-place performance Sept. 28-30 on the same course that will host next spring’s NCAA Championships, the men’s golf team maintained momentum in last weekend’s Carpet Capital Collegiate in Rocky Face, Ga., but still managed to claim a third-place finish in a 15-team field for the three-day event, held Oct. 5-7.

Demon Deacons scorched by Blue Devils; ODU up next

Following wins against both Virginia and Maryland, the Deacon volleyball team ended its four-game winning streak in Durham on Oct. 9 after falling to second-ranked Duke. With this loss the Deacs fell to 10-6 overall, 4-3 in the ACC.

Demon Deacs split sites, sets

The Deacon men’s tennis team was back in action Oct. 5-7 as the team was once again split up to compete in two different tournaments.
Five players were sent to play both singles and doubles at the ITA All-American Championship Prequalifying Tournament at the Lincoln Tennis Center in Stone Mountain, Ga., while four other members of the squad participated in singles competition at the Cingular Wireless Collegiate Tennis Classic at the Cajun Courts in Lafayette, La.
