Broken pipes cut off water
By David Irvine

Olin Physical Lab, Davis and Taylor Houses and the Benson University Center temporarily lost water access Oct. 3 due to a burst water pipe near Olin.

According to maintenance mechanic John Winkal, one or more pipes burst around 4:15 in the afternoon under Olin. “The pipes broke (presumably) because of old age and disrepair,” he said.

“I was in the shower when the water went off, and I had to trek across campus to rinse my hair,” sophomore Meredith Laughridge, a Taylor resident said.

Efird Residence Hall residents were also affected.

“We didn’t lose our water, but the toilets were continuously flushing,” sophomore Linette Capitano said.

As of approximately 10:30 p.m. Oct. 3, no information about the burst had been sent out to inform the campus community of the water problems.

Connie Carson, the director of Residence Life and Housing, could not be reached for comment.

Winkal explained that fixing the situation in the dorms was the first priority, followed by Benson and then Olin.

Two water pipes also burst Sept. 25 in Davis house.

“I think that maintenance really needs to put more effort into taking care of our facilities, considering these are our homes away from home,” Davis resident and sophomore Elodie Sutton said.
