Duke downs Deacs in exciting match

The men's tennis team went 1-1 over the weekend, defeating N.C. State and barely dropping one to Duke.

The Deacs faced N.C. State first and came out with a 4-3 victory to raise their record to 14-9 overall.

All three doubles teams won to secure the doubles point.

Senior Myles Clouston and freshman Raul Munoz teamed up in first doubles for a 9-8 victory.

In second and third doubles, the teams of sophomore Andres Guzman and senior Jimmy Chou and junior Billy Gluck and freshman Johan Hansen, respectively, all won their matches 8-3 respectively.

The Deacs dropped the first two singles matches, but rebounded by winning at third and fourth singles.

Clousten dropped his first singles match after three tough sets, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6.

In second doubles, Gluck fell 1-6, 2-6.

Munoz got the team back in the mix in third singles with a 6-2, 6-4 victory.

Hansen followed up with a 6-1, 6-2 victory in fourth singles.

N.C. State evened things up at 3-3, however, with a victory in fifth singles as Guzman fell 5-7, 4-6.

The match came down to the final game, sixth singles. Freshman Lars Kabiersch took all three sets to finally defeat Devang Desai of N.C. State 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 and secured the 4-3 victory for the Deacs.

The next match against No. 13 Duke proved to be just as close, ending in Duke's favor.

Clouston and Munoz dropped the first doubles match 5-8, but the teams of Guzman/Chou and Gluck/Hansen won their matches to take the doubles point for the Deacs.

Guzman and Chou went to the wire in second doubles, eventually pulling out a victory by a score of 9-8.

In third singles, Gluck and Hansen easily dispatched of the competition 8-4.

Clouston started the Deacs off on the right foot with a victory at first singles, however,
Hansen was the only other Deac able to pull out a victory in singles play.

Clouston defeated Doug Root of Duke in two sets 6-3, 6-4.

Hansen also won 6-3, 6-4 in fourth singles over Ramsey Smith of Duke.

The Demon Deacons finished their regular season against Duke and are now preparing for the ACC Championships beginning today.
The Demon Deacons, seeded sixth, will open play in the second round against third seeded Virginia.

For the season, Clouston was the leader, finishing with a record of 28-12 in singles play.

In doubles play, Clouston was again the leader as he teamed up with Munoz to finish with a record of 27-7 overall.

Munoz was undefeated in ACC play with a perfect 5-0 record in singles matches a perfect 5-0 record in doubles play with Clouston.
Clouston was right behind his partner in singles play, with a strong 4-1 record in the ACC.
