Old Gold and Black Staff Report
Though summer may be a time for students to relax, it is a busy time for facilities management with various construction and renovation projects taking place.
Two ongoing construction projects will be completed: the Information Systems Building and Polo Residence Hall.
The IS building, which is behind the Worrell Professional Center, is scheduled to begin occupancy in late May or June.
The Reserve Officers Training Corps and IS will move in at that time, and later this summer the Bookstore Annex and food service area will open.
The eating facility will include Chick-Fil-A, Krispy Kreme, Starbucks, Freshens Frozen Yogurt, Pan Geo's (display cooking), Deli Corner and a bakery case with freshly baked cakes and cookies.
Polo is scheduled for completion this summer and will be ready for student use in the fall semester.
Between the time of Polo's completion and occupation, the new street between Allen Easley Drive and Wingate Road, and the parking lots located there, will be paved with a final layer of asphalt.
Other construction projects will continue through the summer and into the next school year.
Chief among these projects is the Connector Building, which is scheduled for completion and opening in fall 1999, between Calloway and Carswell Halls.
Also, work on a new elevator in the Z. Smith Reynolds Library, scheduled to be operational by next fall, and construction on a print shop being added to the Scales Fine Arts Center will continue this summer.
Other construction that will begin this summer includes a new rotunda on the north side of Wingate Hall and an animal shelter beside Winston Hall.
Facilities management also has several renovation projects slated for the summer.
Babcock Residence Hall will receive a complete mechanical, electrical and cosmetic renovation similar to that of other residence halls. Renovation will begin directly after commencement.
Wingate will be renovated in preparations for the Divinity School, while the Financial and Accounting Services office in Reynolda Hall will also receive updates.
Sprinkler systems will be installed in Davis House, Bostwick Residence Hall, Johnson Residence Hall and Babcock.
Upgraded fire alarm systems will be put in Poteat and Huffman Houses and Bostwick, Johnson and Babcock.
The computer lab at Student Apartments will be converted to a convenience food service area.
According to a memorandum from Bill Sides, the director of facilities management, facilities management anticipates that area will be completed by the fall semester of the upcoming academic year.
After ROTC moves to the IS building, renovation will begin in the Reynolds gym to convert its previous area into the new Student Health Service. The project will continue into spring 1999.
Facilities management will also install underground conduit banks beneath Wingate Road and Wake Forest Road as part of an underground high-voltage system.
Installation will not cause closing of the roads. However, the roads will be closed starting July 1, when they are scheduled to be repaved.
Facilities management will also oversee the building of a new pool and deck at the Graylyn Conference Center to replace the old one.
When the project is completed, possibly as early as July 1, facilities management will maintain and operate the pool.
