Words of wisdom to new SG officers

With the newly-elected SG executive officers on the brink of taking the helm, they would benefit from reflecting on the preceding officers' accomplishments as well as its mistakes to make their tenureas productive as possible.

The outgoing SG officers leave a legacy of both good and bad. The opening of Shorty's was a significant accomplishment as well as a benefit to student life and should be applauded. SG is also to be commended this year for actively seeking out student opinion on issues such as deferred rush and the plus/minus grading system, attempting to give the students a voice in the establishment of policy. The founding of the Super Council is also a unique and beneficial initiative on the part of SG.

The attendence policy that SG has been using this year to ensure that SG members remain active participants in the offices for which they have been elected is a positive and much-needed plan. The new officers should be sure to keep and enforce policies like these that help serve as a self-check and ultimately benefit the sutdent body.

The new SG officers should be careful not to repeat the same errors some outgoing officers have made. It is also important for them to follow through with their campaign promises. The ideas of newly-elected Speaker of the House, sophomore Tina Carlucci, of actually putting the bills that SG passes into practice instead of putting them aside to be forgotten is an essential one -- one that we hope she will see to fruition. Newly-elected secretary sophomore Jonathan Perry should make sure his plan of bridging the Resident Student Association and SG results in a productive, positive outcome. Junior Ryan Marsh, the new SG treasurer, should take initiative in making sure that SBAC and the new capital expediture plan are both run fairly and efficiently. And hopefully junior Scott Plumridge, the new SG president, will stay devoted to his campaign promise of improving the relationships among SG officers. One of the keys to any smoothly-running and efficient organization is the ability to get along with coworkers in a professinal, respectful and mature manner.

And lastly, as holds true for all public figures, they must remember to keep criticism in perpsective.
