Not having won a game since the beginning of January, the women's basketball team increased its losing streak to 12 with a loss to Georgia Tech Sunday, 83-67. As the Deacons try desperately to pull themselves out of a slump, the games just seem to get harder.
The Deacons began the game down by seven points until senior Lindsay Seawright sunk a free throw. Tough times followed and the Deacons were unable to pull themselves out of the hole they were in.
Sophomore Heidi Coleman and freshman Alisha Mosley tried to attack from the perimeter but went one-for-10 between the two of them in the first half.
The Deacons were able to keep the score within ten for most of the first half until Tech began to increase its lead. Coleman dropped the Deacons' only three pointer of the half with 1:50 left, but Tech came right back and answered her with its own three pointer.
Down by 18 points at the half, the Deacons went into the locker room looking for some answers that have not been there for a month.
The Deacons came into the second half with a renewed attitude, but unfortunately so did Georgia Tech. They were down by as much as 30 points more than half way through the second half.
With 7:43 to go, Coleman and Mosley opened up from the perimeter, putting on what looked like a clinic in three-point shooting. Mosley started out the scoring with a shot from the top of the key. She was followed by Coleman from the right corner and the two went back and forth from there.
It was still not enough to put the Deacons back in contention. Although they shot 48 percent from the field in the second half, Tech overpowered them shooting 53 percent.
Sophomore Cynthia Kelley finished out the game strong for the Deacons, scoring another three pointer for the Deacons in the last few minutes as well as two lay-ups in the final minute. Kelley was the high scorer for the Deacons with 17 points.
The Deacons return home for a game against North Carolina State today. The team dropped one to the Wolfpack earlier in the year, 88-58, so the Demon Deacons are sure to be in for another formidable test.
