Winston woes - Corinne Woodcock

Student Union was proud to bring a world renowned pianist, George Winston, to this univeristy on Jan. 31. But what impressed us even more was the student response to this event. By winter break, more than 200 students had signed up to purchase tickets in the Student Union office. Forgoing this campus' tradtional Friday night offerings, over 2,000 members of the student body, faculty, staff and community all eagery converged on Wait Chapel that Friday night to enjoy an evening of music.

Response to Winston's style and selection is, of course, a personal matter. George is not a showy performer. His classic style lies in his stocking feet and the quality of his music. Loyal fans understand his benign stage presence and sit back to enjoy the extraordinary sounds he is able to evoke from not one but three instruments.

By focusing on the positives, the George Winston concert was not the "disappointment" that Christian Conti saw ("Performance by Winston disappoints", Feb.6), but rather a huge success made possible by many student volunteers and the eager participation of the student body. The Student Union would like to thank everyone that filled Wait Chapel to capacity on Jan. 31 and made this great evening possible. With your continued support, we can keep "perfecting" our ability to bring quality performers to campus.
