A look at the university through the eyes of Winston-Salem
Area residents call university both beneficial and elitist

While many say gates are needed for security reasons, there is some concern that they would cut the campus off further from Winston-Salem residents and engender feelings of resentment.

The universitiy's involvement in local economic development runs deep. When RJR Nabisco moved out of its world headquarters on Reynolds Boulevard, it donated the property to the university, which now leases it to PepsiCo. The university also owns many office buildings on Reynolda Road.
