Men's hoops signs 7-1 center

The post-Duncan scenario grew a little brighter for the men's basketball team Tuesday, when it announced that it had signed 7-1, 277-pound center Loren Woods out of Cardinal Ritter High School in St. Louis, Mo. He is one of the top high school prospects in the country.

Woods, who was also recruited by Syracuse, Temple, Tulane and George Washington, averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds last season.

Several Deacons receive conference honors

Two Demon Deacon men's soccer players were named to the All-ACC second team this week, and one Deacon women's basketball player was voted to the preseason All-ACC second team as well.

In a preseason media poll, Deacon junior Tracy Connor, the starting center for the Demon Deacon women's basketball team, was voted second-team all-conference after receiving the eighth-largest vote total in the conference.

Meanwhile, in a poll conducted with ACC men's soccer coaches, junior back Josh Timbers and freshman forward Serge Daniv were both voted second team all-conference.

Rolex golf rankings out

According to the polls recently put out by the Rolex Collegiate Golf Tour, the Demon Deacon men's and women's golf teams both rank highly on the national scene.

Rolex ranks the women's team at 10th in the nation, behind No. 9 North Carolina and ahead of No. 11 Duke. The men's team is ranked No. 13, just behind 12th-ranked Clemson.

Individually, several members of the women's team and one from the men's squad cracked the rankings. For the women's team,.junior Kimberly Marshall was ranked No. 27, while sophomore Alexandra Armas and junior Laura Philo were tied for 31st in the country.

Junior Justin Roof, listed as the 53rd-ranked player in the nation, was the only member of the men's team to find his way into the rankings.

Duncan first team preseason All-American

Junior Demon Deacon center Tim Duncan was one of the two leading vote-getters in the Associated Press' preseason All-America team, tying Kerry Kittles of Villanova with 55 votes each.

The remainder of the first team consists of Connecticut forward Ray Allen, Massachusetts center Marcus Camby and Oklahoma forward Ryan Minor.

Ndoma-Ogar on "Good Works Team"

The College Football Association named senior Demon Deacon offensive lineman Elton Ndoma-Ogar to its 1995 "Good Works Team." Team members are chosen annually by the CFA for their community service efforts.

Since his freshman year, Ndoma-Ogar has spoken to and tutored students in elementary and middle schools. The senior has also volunteered with Special Olympics athletes and participated in the University's "Santa's Helpers" program.

Field Hockey event this weekend

The university will host the NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championships this weekend at Campus Stadium. The semifinals of the event will take place Saturday beginning at noon, when top-ranked North Carolina plays James Madison. In the other semi-final at 2:45 p.m., Maryland will play Northeastern.

The Championship game will take place Sunday at 1 p.m.
